Description

Course provides narrated slides describing and showing gross and microscopic lesions of chondrodystrophy, osteochondrosis, dyschondroplasia, and osteomyelitis in birds.

Objectives

Identify specific regions of bone and describe lesions, if present.
Given gross and/or virtual slides, students will identify regions of bone, including epiphysis, physis, zone of proliferation, zone of prehypertrophy, zone of hypertrophy, metaphysis, diaphysis. Students will describe or recognize from a list of written descriptions, any lesions present.
Differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of chondrodystrophy.
Given gross and/or virtual slides, students will differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of chondrodystrophy.
Differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of osteochondrosis.
Given gross and/or virtual slides, students will differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of osteochondrosis..
Differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of dyschondroplasia.
Given gross and/or virtual slides, students will differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of dyschondroplasia..
Differentiate normal bone from bone with lesions of osteomyelitis.

Dr. Fletcher is a Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State. He is a Diplomate of the ACVP and a founder diplomate of the ACPV. His area of interest is avian histopathology and he is the editor of the 3rd edition of Avian Histopathology.
