Description

This course is a must for every member of the practice team - from kennel assistants to veterinarians to receptionists. Regardless of position, every team member can improve how they communicate with others, especially when things are not going well.

Effective Communication for the Veterinary Team provides realistic examples of good and bad communication within a veterinary hospital and illustrates ways to communicate in a productive, not destructive, manner. Participants will be given ideas and a template for creating a communication code of conduct for the practice.

Objectives

On completion of this course the learner will be able to:
1. Recognize the elements of communication
2. Identify and describe the four styles of communication as they pertain to speaking and writing
3. Facilitate the proper methods of communicating
4. Deduce conflict in a timely manner
5. List recommendations for dealing with conflict in a constructive manner
6. Explain communicating with upset clients effectively
7. Develop a code of conduct within your practice for effective communication

Erin Macdonald, CVT, CVPM

Erin Macdonald is currently employed at Haines Road Animal Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida and holds the position of Hospital Administrator. She has worked in the veterinary field since 1999, her first position as a receptionist.

In 2006, she received an Associate in Arts Degree in General Studies and an Associate's in Science Degree in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College. That year, she became a Certified Veterinary Technician. After receiving a Certificate in Hospital Management and a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Technology Management, she achieved the designation of Certified Veterinary Practice Manager in 2009.

Erin is a member of both the Florida Veterinary Technician Association and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. Erin lives in Pinellas Park, Florida with her son, Kingston, dog, Gemma; and two cats, Gia and Roxanne.
