Description

Bipolar disorder is a common chronic mood disorder in our society. BPD is characterized by swings between intense depression and periods of excessive mood elevation known as mania. BPD is a lifelong disorder and a real challenge to manage. Once the diagnosis has been established, the treatment depends on the subtype of the BPD. As with all mental health disorders, the key to better treatment is patient education. It has been shown that education can help improve patients’ compliance with medication regimens and help them lead a better quality of life. Treatment of BPD requires medications. The type of medication prescribed depends on the stage of BPD and the severity of symptoms. Many classes of drugs are used to treat acute manic episodes; these include antipsychotics, anti-seizure drugs and benzodiazepines.
