Description

Review the WA State Interagency Opioid Working Plan and learn the strategies that involve pharmacists.
Learn how to recognize and address a person with suspected opioid use disorder.
Learn the steps in treating overdose and the important instructions to give with naloxone overdose kits.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
List the strategies in the WA State Interagency Opioid Working Plan that involve pharmacists.
Recognize visible signs of opioid intoxication and withdraw.
Initiate a conversation with a patient you suspect may be suffering from opioid use disorder.
Develop a handout for patients with information about local rehabilitation centers.

Kimberly Koon, Pharm.D., MS

Kimberly is a practicing pharmacist and freelance medical writer. She started her pharmacy career in the public health sector at Indian Health Services in Fort Defiance, AZ. Since then she has spent most of her career working in hospital and managed care pharmacy settings. Recently she earned a master’s degree in biomedical writing through the University of the Sciences and now writes continuing education, medical journal articles, and contributes to healthcare communications on a part-time basis. She also works part-time at Group Health Cooperative to avoid missing out on the face-to-face delivery of healthcare.
