Description

Developing and Maintaining a Multidisciplinary State Vision Rehabilitation Program

Objectives

Start With What You Have
Appreciate the vision rehab personnel options already available through many state agencies for the blind and vision impaired that can partner with contracted state optometrists providing low vision exams to provide relatively inexpensive multidisciplinary low vision care from the broad perspective of vision rehabilitation.
System Structure
Understand how one such state system was established with existing personel, how independently contracted optometrists from various localities were recruited, and how their contracts ensure team participation.
Ensuring Multidisciplinary Teamwork
Understand the importance of a (flat-fee) direct state agency payment to independently contracted optometrists for each low vision exam, and the importance of authorizing that payment through an agency vision rehab perspective.
Low Vision Aid Loaner Systems
Appreciate the importance of a low vision aid loaner system, and how one state agency has approached the logistical challenges it presents.
