Stand Magnifier Optical Strategies

Objectives

Review Axial Magnification In All Its Forms.
Provide a narrative description of axial magnification in all its forms, as well as a reference to a full geometric presentation on axial magnification.
Understand Aspects Of Axial Magnification Unique To Stand Magnifiers.
Discuss the Stand magnifier's formation of an enlarged virtual image at a fixed distance with a fixed enlargement.
Use The Stand Magnifier's Maximum Usable Add With Its Enlargement Factor.
Understand the reason for a maximum usable add, and under what condition it occurs. Understand the effect of a stand msgnifier's constant enlargement factor on axial magnification resulting from a reading add, as well as the reason for a stand magnifier's maximum axial magnification.
Use The Stand Magnifier With Lower Adds And Its Enlargement Factor.
Understand patterns of axial magnification reduction when using a stand magnifier with reduced adds.
Examine The Effects Of Using Reduced Adds With Three Specific Stand Magnifiers.
Understand the rate of reduction in fields and axial magnification as reading adds are reduced with the same stand magnifier. Understand how this rate varies with different stand magnifiers.
Understand How To Measure A Stand Magnifier's Maximum Usable Add.
Appreciate clarity with stand magnifier working distances as a range, and understand what happens to the calculated enlargement factor if magnification is determined subjectively at one end of that range. Understand how to avoid this error when determining the maximum usable add.
Use Stand Magnifiers Without Referencing Their Labeled Magnification.
Consider labeling stand magnifiers with their constant enlargement factor and maximum usable add.
Choose Stand Magnifier Optical Strategies Based On Patient Goals At Various Working Distances.
