Description

To clot, or not to clot? That is the question. The hemostatic system is a complex protective mechanism sealing off avenues of blood loss through the vascular system upon damage. While cessation of blood loss is vital in preventing subsequent anemia and eventual death, coagulation of the blood is normally controlled, limiting it within the intravascular space to maintain normal blood flow and minimizing chances of thrombosis. This delicate balance and interaction of procoagulant and anticoagulant mechanisms are essential in the proper function of the hemostatic system. In emergency and critical care, dysfunctions of the hemostatic system lead to life-threatening situations through a variety of mechanisms.

Objectives

Key steps
Name and describe the key steps of each phase of the cell-based coagulation model.
Disorders
Explain the mechanisms behind common hypocoagulability disorders
Risk factors
Recognize risk factors for developing hypercoagulable states
Consequences
Review consequences of hypocoagulability and hypercoagulability

Kenichiro Yagi, BS, RVT, VTS(ECC, SAIM)
on behalf of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society

Over the 17 years in practice, Ken has discovered and refined his role as a veterinary technician by promoting compassionate and progressive care for the patients and their family. He obtained his VTS certification in emergency and critical care as well as small animal internal medicine. He now practices at Adobe Animal Hospital as an ICU Manager and Blood Bank Manager. Ken’s role has progressed from directly caring for patients to providing an environment for others to do the same. Ken works to encourage further recognition of the vital role of the veterinary nurses and technicians through work with organizations such as the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, and serving as a board member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians, and the Veterinary Innovation Council. He pursues the goal by showing the value of the profession’s perspective in veterinary medicine. His endeavors are made possible through support from his family, Iris, Haruto, and Haruka. Ken invites everyone to ask “Why?” to understand the “What” and “How” of our field, and to constantly pursue new limits as veterinary professionals and individuals.
