Description

There is increasing information to support the need for improving nursing education. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports on quality care emphasize the incorporation of five healthcare core competencies in all healthcare professions education, and the IOM report Future of Nursing indicates the need to increase nursing leadership and knowledge of quality improvement. The education report led by Dr. Patricia Benner, Educating Nurses (2010), calls for major change, a radical transformation. This webinar examines the IOM core competencies and their critical relevance to improving nursing education and practice. We will discuss teaching-learning practices to integrate these core competencies in the classroom, lab and simulation, distance education, and clinical learning experiences for students. Objectives Describe the five Institute of Medicine (IOM) core competencies and relationship to the Quality Chasm IOM reports and nursing education. Examine strategies to facilitate integration of the five core competencies in the classroom, lab and simulation, distance education, and clinical learning experiences for students.
