Description

A discussion of post-operative management of dogs that have back surgery as well as protective and preventive strategies for those predisposed to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The focus is on chondrodystrophoid-type disease (Type 1 lesions or extrusion of disc material) affecting breeds such as Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Basset Hounds, French Bulldogs and Pugs. Dr. Chiaramonte discusses pain management (NSAIDS vs steroids) as well as various modalities including acupuncture, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, passive range of motion, active exercises, land and underwater treadmills, and others.

Understand post-operative management of patients that have surgery for intervertebral disc disease as well as protective and preventive strategies
- Pain management of patients
- Goals of rehabilitation postoperatively
- Multimodal approach to postoperative care and the prevention of disc extrusion in chondrodystrophoid dogs / dogs at risk for disc extrusion
Understand various modalities incorporated in postoperative management of patients and that pet owners can implement in home care of their patients
- NSAIDS, steroids, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure meds, NMDA antagonists, and other medications
- Acupuncture
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation

Dr. Chiaramonte owns a b­outique mo­bile pract­ice that s­pecializes­ in concie­rge medici­ne and reh­abilitatio­n, and she serves as a Veterinary Advisor for Assisi Animal Health.
