Description

Parenteral fluid therapy is probably the most widely used drug therapy in clinical practice. Yes, fluids are essentially drugs with pros and cons, risks and benefits. In this presentation you will discover what the most common fluids currently used are, their relative properties and special considerations. Crystalloids and synthetic colloids are discussed in some detail. You will then discover how parenteral fluid therapy is used to treat the two main indications for fluid therapy in clinical patients, namely hypovolaemia and dehydration. If you haven't already, do check out the presentation in this portal entitled Shock, Hypovolaemia and Dehydration. The fluid therapy presentation is accompanied by a comprehensive set of notes that include all the details with respect to calculating fluid doses and rates. Fluid therapy is an area that has received much attention in recent times and some of these recent concepts are touched upon here.
