Description

Despite the gains that have been made since the 1860s when Joseph Lister and Louis Pasteur
identified infectious organisms and infection control practices to minimize their impact, today's
healthcare environments persist in containing threats from infectious agents. Unlike the photo
below, today's dental professionals must be alert to the potential for the transmission of
pathogens in the dental healthcare setting.

Objectives

On completion of this course the learner will be able to:
1. Describe the chain of infection and detail the routes of transmission for disease
causing microorganisms.
2. Describe an infection control program and the hierarchy of controls to prevent
transmission of infection.
3. Identify strategies to prevent occupational exposures to blood and body fluids.
4. Define Standard Precautions and discuss its application in the dental office.
5. Identify methods to ensure that patient care items and environmental surfaces are
safe for use.
6. Describe the most commonly used sterilization methods, and list the pros and cons of
each.
