Description

According to the author, one of the primary objectives of endodontic therapy is to establish an adequate seal with root canal filling material. In this article, Dr. Southard discusses the benefits of performing immediate core buildups at the time of endodontic treatment and questions the notion that a root should be shaped differently than required for endodontic obturation to fit a prefabricated post.

Dr. Southard then presents the advantages and disadvantages of three direct buildup materials that are currently available. In each instance, he uses clinical cases to demonstrate all the techniques presented.

Objectives

On completion of this course the learner will be able to understand:
1. The importance of establishing an adequate seal following endodontic treatment
2. The advantages of placing an immediate core buildup at the time of endodontic obturation
3. The advantages and disadvantages of amalgam, composite resin and reinforced glass-ionomer cement materials for core buildup and the techniques for using each
4. The drawbacks of shaping a root to fit a prefabricated post and techniques for modifying prefabricated posts to fit passively into prepared root spaces
