Description

The oral health of our patients is never static. Vulnerabilities and risks for oral diseases and disorders change over a lifetime. With advances in dental science, it is becoming increasingly possible to determine a patient's risk for oral disease and tailor treatments accordingly. Risk assessment uses knowledge of disease indicators and risk factors associated with oral disease to determine which patients are more or less likely to prevent disease, have disease progress, or maintain their oral health status. Best practices dictate that once the clinician identifies the patient's risk for oral disease (low, moderate, high, extreme), evidence-based treatments or recommendations may be used to create a therapeutic and/or preventive care plan that will assist the patient in achieving optimum oral health.

Objectives

On completion of this course the learner will be able to:
1. Analyze the principles of oral disease management by risk assessment
2. Recognize the value of performing a risk assessment on patients
3. Describe and differentiate between clinical protocols used to manage oral disease and those to improve oral health
