Description

The peri-implant tissue in health and disease and its importance for lasting success in implant treatments. Implant dentistry is not a novelty any more. What started almost 40 years ago as the revolution of osseointegration, is today a widely applicable and highly predictable treatment that has benefited millions of people worldwide.

Objectives

Objectives
Identify the main anatomical and physiological characteristics of the peri-implant tissues and understand the respective clinical implications. Identify the main risk factors affecting peri-implant tissue health in the short and long term and the implications for our implant treatment plann. Describe the main principles of design of surgical and prosthetic interventions in order to prevent complications and esure health and esthetics of the peri-implant tissues. Identify the factors that can lead to peri-implant tissue inflammations and design strategies to manage such complications.

Dr. Nikos Mattheos DDS, MASc, PhD.

Dr. Nikos Mattheos graduated from the Dental Faculty University of Athens. He completed his PhD degree in the University of Malmö, in Sweden where he also received specialist training in Periodontology. He then completed a 3-year residency with focus on Implant Dentistry and Fixed Prosthodontics in the department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics in the University of Bern, Switzerland under Professor N.P Lang. He served as Associate Professor of Implant Dentistry in Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia, where he designed and di-rected the Master of Science in Implant Dentistry Programme. His research evolves around many aspects of implant dentistry, peri-implant tissue inflammations and bone regeneration and is disseminated through more than 80 publications in international peer reviewed journals and he has received the IADR researcher’s award in 2003 and 2013. He has served at the position of Associate Professor in the University of Malmo (Sweden) and Griffith University (Australia). He is currently As-sociate Professor and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong, where he directs two postgraduate pro-grammes in Implant Dentistry and is active with teaching, research and patient care. He has designed and directed the 1st Massive Open Online Course in Implant Dentistry, to be launched in In October 2016 in Coursera by the University of Hong Kong.
