Description

More and more, oral health experts are agreeing that children should see the dentist when their first teeth erupt. Unfortunately, there are few pediatric dentists throughout New York State, and many general dentists are leery of treating the very young in their dental office.This course will demystify the various issues and concerns surrounding treating very young children. It will present the salient issues affecting promotion of oral health and establishment of a dental home for the very young child.A broad range of infant, toddler and preschooler oral health issues will be presented, including prenatal oral health, tooth formation and eruption, infant oral medicine, nutrition, initial oral evaluation, oral hygiene, prevention, intervention, the role of anticipatory guidance and an understanding of the Head Start system and its dental requirements.

Objectives
This course will present the salient issues affecting promotion of oral health and the establishment of a dental home for the very young child. At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:Examine young children using the -knee to knee- method.Conduct a risk assessment.Provide fluoride varnish as needed.Educate parents.

Juan Lopez-RosarioDr. Juan Lopez-Rosario-s dental practice includes patients of all ages. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he grew up in a very close knit family with strong family values. Because of those values, Dr. Lopez-Rosario-s practice and teachings reflect his strong compassion for patients and quality of care. Dr. Lopez-Rosario completed his postdoctoral training at the James M. Rozanski Faxton, St. Luke-s Healthcare program in Utica, NY. where he remains a staff dentist. He still dedicates much of his time to teaching. While at St. Luke-s, his research and lectures on dental trauma, drug addiction, early childhood caries, and pregnancy in oral health, remain as part of the curriculum at St. Luke-s.
