Description

On a written examination, a student should be able to:Describe the chemistry of the setting reaction of gypsum products by providing the correct hydration states of the materials for various steps.Explain the mechanism of setting of gypsum products (crystal formation and interlocking) in relation to the mixing, working, and setting stages.Indicate the reaction water and extra water needed for mixing plaster, stone, and die stone products.Explain the porosity that occurs in plaster, stone, and die stone, and relate it to the setting expansion and crushing strength.Provide examples of additives that are accelerators, retarders, fillers, or pigments.Explain the effects of proportioning, mixing, temperature, and additives on the setting reaction.Indicate how infection control is accomplished by additives to the impression materials, impression material treatments, or additives to the stone materials.
