Consideration of the key components of all dental waxes (base wax, modifier waxes, and colorants) with examples (paraffin, carnuba, beeswax, microcrystalline waxes, and others). Review of key requirements for waxes for patterns, impressions, and processing operations. Detailed consideration of the structure and properties of inlay casting wax.

Objectives
On a written examination, a student should be able to:Provide a simple definition of the term "wax", provide a generic composition for dental waxes, and list some natural waxes that are used in dental compositions.Indicate the 3 major categories of dental wax applications.Give an approximate composition for dental inlay wax. State the 3 major requirements for an inlay wax. Indicate the approximate melting range that might be involved for wax use to avoid premature thermal decomposition of the components. Provide an example of the coefficient of thermal expansion for inlay wax.
