Description

Good oral health is an essential part of general health in all age groups and during whole life spans.  For many older people, the carer is their first point of contact; the person who is, or should be, most aware and involved in their daily oral healthcare needs. This programme demonstrates how carers can provide preventive oral care to help older adults maintain good oral health. The programme has been supported by Colgate, a global leader in oral care strongly committed to improving oral health globally.

Objectives

Objectives
Course Objectives: The purpose of this programme is to provide carers with the appropriate knowledge and practical skills for delivering prevention in oral care. This includes: Awareness of the relationship between good oral health and general health Confidence in  the key processes required to maintain older adults oral health Delivering evidence based preventive advice and interventions Practical everyday management of oral health care When to refer to a dental professional And the role as a care provider. Course Requirements This 90 minute programme is divided into 4 topics. Topic 1: Oral Health Assessment and Planning In this topic we show how to carry out a basic oral health assessment. The focus will be on communication, especially with those who are particularly fearful or uncooperative.  You’ll also find out about a range of oral health problems commonly experienced by older adults. We will also consider what procedures should be put in place to plan and record the assessments. Topic 2: Prevention and Daily Oral Health Carers must know how best to deliver advice on oral hygiene to their care recipients. However, it can be difficult to strike up the right balance of maintaining a high level of oral hygiene and cleanliness required for good oral health while still allowing the care recipient their independence. In this topic we will demonstrate: how to devise optimal daily oral care regimes for individual older adults and how to manage, educate and guide the care recipient in their own daily oral care. Topic 3: Dental Referral Once it has been established that an older adult needs to see a dentist, arranging it can sometimes be problematic. In this topic we will explain how to make a referral, the information needed to exchange, how to prepare for a domiciliary visit, and we will also explore the somewhat tricky issue of consent. Topic 4: Train the Trainer This topic identifies the role and need for oral care trainers to support the promotion of oral health and discuss how this improves the overall care given to the recipients. From here we will explore the ways enthusiasm and knowledge can be shared between carers.
