Description

The position of the central incisors, in terms of A-P and vertical position as well as torque, are arguably the most important aspects of overall smile quality. Patients are keenly aware of this aspect of their smiles, yet orthodontists rarely specify the final incisor position that they are trying to achieve with any given treatment. Without precise goals, treatment success is often judged on occlusal outcomes, desire to prevent extractions, photographic results, or the all too common “the patient was happy” default measure of success. Dr. John McDonald will demonstrate how to think about treatment planning in a completely different manner and explain how to use a traced ceph and treatment simulation software to place the incisors in the desired position and build the occlusal outcome based on this position. Dr. McDonald will also explain how the MBT Versatile+ Appliance System was designed to deliver the kind of precision and control that allows such specific treatment goals be met. Dr. McDonald will share how viewing orthodontic cases in this manner has simplified his treatment planning for even the most difficult cases and and helped prevent extended treatment times, unsatisfactory results and unhappy patients.

Dr. John McDonald practiced general dentistry for six years before obtaining his Orthodontic Certificate and joining his father, Terry, in what became McDonald Orthodontics in Salem, Oregon. Their practice was the first in the U.S. to fully integrate the MBT Appliance System after it was released in 1997. Since then, Dr. McDonald continues to use the MBT System concepts of stability, periodontal health, and facial aesthetics along with efficient tooth movement to provide the best clinical care to his patients.
