This course presents a detailed discussion of allergic reactions and the development of bacterial resistance with regard to antibiotic use in treatment of adult periodontitis.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do the following:Identify the characteristics of a drug allergy reaction that distinguish it from other adverse reactions.Discuss the different types of allergic reactions and the drugs commonly associated with them.Describe the sensitization potential of topical tetracycline.Discuss the development of bacterial resistance and the factors that are believed to minimize it.

O'Hanley, Ph.D., M.D. has served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs since March 2004. From 2002 to 2003 he served as the Vice President Clinical Development for Maxygen, Inc., and was the Chief Scientific Officer for Preventis, Inc. from 2000 to 2003. Prior to that, Dr. O'Hanley was with Quintiles, Inc. from 1998 to 2000, most recently as the Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Anti-Infective Therapeutic & Immunology Therapeutic Groups. Prior to that, he was with Shaman Pharmaceuticals as a Visiting Clinical Scientist from 1996 to 1997 while on sabbatical from the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he served from 1985 through 1998, most recently an Associate Professor. Dr. O'Hanley holds a B.A. in Zoology from Pomona College, a Ph.D. in Anatomy and an M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina.
