Description

To start the ball rolling, here is an analogy to help patients understand how they can Beat the Beast of Dental Disease in their own mouths: If your house were on fire, you would do whatever necessary to put the fire out. And, you also would remove what was fueling the fire. You certainly would not pour gasoline on the smoldering timbers. After the fire was out, you would repair your home to make the foundation stronger and more resistant to future fires. Let’s take this idea to your mouth. If you have gum disease or tooth decay, your mouth is on fire. You need to remove whatever irritants that are causing this fire, and you certainly would not want to put things into your mouth that were fueling these diseases. Once you got your mouth back into health, you should do the things that could keep your mouth strong and healthy into the future. So, let’s get to it. Introduction to the In-Office Program: Beat the Beast of Dental Disease The previous four parts of this five-part course have addressed the essential facts and published science of (1) our species’ nutritional evolution over 2.5 million years and (2) the causes and prevalence of dental disease today. I suggested four pillars or concepts that support the basis for overall health. Now, it’s time to distill all these complex ideas into an organized, simple, science-based program from which patients can get motivated to take control of their dental health. With this biological prevention program, you, as the dental professional, may be the only healthcare person who will speak to your patients about these basic facts for health. You can make a difference one patient at a time. Our goal is to stop, reverse, and prevent dental disease. A beneficial side effect will be to improve overall health as well. Before we get into the details of my program, we need to step back and think of what we are trying to do. People are creatures of habit. People don’t make changes easily. Our society has become accustomed to convenience, and we want to take the quickest route. This program will be a challenge to your patients because it requires commitment and change. Most patients will not want to make this effort. Not every patient who wants to make the effort will be successful. We as dental professionals must be there for all our patients. We need to support and encourage our patients if they try to make a change but are having a difficult time of it, or if they become disenchanted. It’s not a problem for a patient to drop out of our program and then recommit at a later time. Whatever works for our patients is the way we should proceed. Again, our goal is to stop, reverse, and prevent dental disease. Below are the other courses in this series: Beat the Beast of Dental Disease: Part 1 of 5 - We Were Born to be Healthy: What Happened? Beat the Beast of Dental Disease: Part 2 of 5 - Causes of Dental Disease: The Obvious and the Not-So-Obvious Beat the Beast of Dental Disease: Part 3 of 5 - Dental Diseases and Systematic Diseases: Correlation or Causation? Beat the Beast of Dental Disease: Part 4 of 5 - Four Pillars of Health: Nutrient-Dense Foods, Efficient Exercise, Restorative Sleep, and Reduction of Stress

Periodontist Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner Certified Primal Health Coach Dr. Dan, as his patients call him, has been a periodontist for over four decades. He divides his career into two periods: before and after the laser coupled with the dynamics of ancestral nutrition. The laser-based LANAP ® protocol and the importance of ancestral nutrition, he believes, are revolutionizing the treatment of gum disease. “LANAP is reengineering how I treat periodontal disease. There is no cutting with a scalpel blade and no stitches. And the realization that evolutionary nutrition is the basis for total body health is mind boggling.” His G.U.M. Protocol , based on evolutionary nutrition, assists patients in eliminating unhealthy lifestyle routines and poor food choices by replacing them with healthy ones. The body needs nutrient-dense foods and healthy gut bacteria to create amazing results. Poor nutrition and unhealthy gut bacteria lead to various medical and dental diseases and imbalances. "It’s more exciting for me to save teeth than to replace them." Dr. Danenberg acknowledges that traditional gum surgery could achieve results that were “okay, but never terrific. After 35 years, I now am getting much better results with much less discomfort for my patients.” LANAP takes far less time, with little or no pain, and the patient can often return to work the next day. “And by incorporating the principles of evolutionary nutrition, I am helping patients heal and strengthen their entire bodies.” Dr. Dan’s passion for periodontics in general—and for the LANAP protocol combined with his emphasis on evolutionary nutrition in particular—is palpable. He gives seminars regarding the cutting-edge concepts of nutrition and laser treatment to the general public and is happy to spread the word among his fellow professionals. He has been a member of many dental and periodontal organizations, including the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Currently he enjoys Life Membership in the American Dental Association. Dr. Alvin Danenberg received his dental degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1972, and his Specialty Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Maryland, School of Graduate Dentistry in 1974. The following two years he was Chief of Periodontics at Charleston Air Force Base, and later had periodontal practices in Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina. Along with his active practice, he wrote and published from January 1990 through December 2001 “The Personal Report” newsletter, which was mailed quarterly to every periodontist in the United States. He joined Beaufort Family Dentistry in South Carolina in 2009 and now sees patients at Bluffton Center for Dentistry. Dr. Danenberg received advanced training in evolutionary nutrition from the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health as well as The Center for Mind-Body Medicine. He received his CFMP (Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner) designation from Functional Medicine University in June 2014, and the Primal Health Coach Certification in September 2014. In 2015, he was appointed to the faculty of the College of Integrative Medicine and created its integrative periodontal teaching module. He also provides a unique opportunity for anyone to discuss their nutrition and periodontal questions with him live online at DrDanenberg.com.
