Description

This course is a comprehensive review of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and provides the necessary information for a dental office to be in compliance with the Standard. The course consists of five (5) sections.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do the following:Review the requirements for a dental office to be in compliance with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.Provide a general explanation of the epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases.Provide an explanation of the modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens.Review the components of the exposure control plan.Provide an explanation of the appropriate methods for recognizing tasks and other activities that may involve exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials.Provide an explanation of the use and limitations of methods that will prevent or reduce exposure including appropriate engineering controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment.Provide information on the types, proper use, location, removal, handling, decontamination and disposal of personal protective equipment.Provide an explanation of the basis for selection of personal protective equipment.Provide information on the hepatitis B vaccination.Provide information on the appropriate actions to take in an emergency involving blood or other potentially infectious materials.Provide an explanation of the procedure to follow if an exposure incident occurs.Provide an explanation of the biohazard signs and labels and/or color-coding used in the practice.

John B. Roberson, D.M.D. is from Hattiesburg, MS where graduated from Hattiesburg High School. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his Bachelor of Science. Dr. Roberson obtained his dental doctorate at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in Jackson, MS. He received numerous awards and honors including becoming President of the American Student Dental Association his third year. Dr. Roberson performed his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at University Hospital at the University of Cincinnati. His training included anesthesia, dentoalveolar surgery, facial trauma, reconstructive surgery, cleft lip & palate surgery, pathology, advanced trauma life support, cardiology, and trauma surgery. He served as Chairman of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Residents Organization as well as one of the founding members. Dr. Roberson has dual board certifications. He is a Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon as well as Board Certified by the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a member of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Southeastern Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, Mississippi Dental Association, South Mississippi Dental Association, and the Mississippi Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a co-founder of the Institute of Medical Emergency Preparedness. Dr. Roberson has lectured and written extensively on the subject of medical emergency preparedness and training. He co-developed the curriculum for Advanced Life Support for Dentistry (ALSD) and the Emergency Response System, which has been endorsed by both national and state organizations.
