This course discusses the dental implications of recent advances in the care of diabetic patients.

Objectives

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do the following:Discuss the results of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial study.Explain the differences in dynamics of various types of insulin.Identify which oral diabetes agents are associated with hypoglycemia.Discuss the various conventional and intensive insulin regimens used in insulin-dependent diabetes.Describe the signs and symptoms of and treatment for hypoglycemia.

Brian L. Mealey, DDS

Dr. Mealey is an associate professor in the department of periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was previously a Colonel in the United States Air Force, where he served as chairman of the department of periodontics at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, program director of the US Air Force periodontics residency, and Chief Militar Military Consultant in periodontics to the Surgeon General. Dr. Mealey has published over 60 articles, abstracts and textbook chapters, with an emphasis on the inter-relationships between oral and systemic health. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is a consultant to the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs.
