Description

AIM: The aim of this programme is to provide a learning resource for all dental team members which meets the GDC requirements for Radiography and Radiation Protection.
This 1.5 hour module cover radiation physics and equipment. There are interactive questions and activities throughout the module which are not assessed. However, on completion of the module there is a separately assessed exam. You will need to achieve 70 % for the final exam to complete the module and access your CPD certificate. You will have two opportunities to achieve the required score.
Completion of this module and passing the associated exam will satisfy the GDC requirements for 2 hours of CPD in Radiography and Radiation Protection and provides IRMER continuing education for the dental team involved in radiography.


Radiation physics and equipment covers the production of x-rays, their properties and interactions which result in the formation of a radiographic image. The biological effects of radiation and its risks and benefits.

Objectives

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module you should be able to:

a. Define ionising radiation and explain the general properties of radiation.
b. Describe the production of x-rays as well as the biological effects, risks and benefits.
c. Define the terms exposure, effective dose, absorbed, equivalent and collective dose.
d. Explain the stochastic, somatic and deterministic effects of radiation and give examples.
