Description

Sleep clinicians must be knowledgeable in sleep disorders, sleep cycles, hospital (sleep clinics) sleep studies and home sleep studies. Dentists who fabricate oral appliances will need to form relationships with sleep specialists and sleep labs. Without a thorough knowledge of sleep, dentists will not get referrals.
Discussion regarding the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea, obstructive, mixed, central sleep apnea. Three stages of non-REM sleep and REM sleep. How to diagnose sleep apnea using Apnea Hyponea Index (AHI), evaluating the oxygen level in the blood. Hospital sleep studies and home sleep studies, advantages and disadvantages. Oral appliance and CPAP advantages and disadvantages.

Sleep Case Ken
The devastating effect that loud snoring can have on a relationship cannot be overemphasized. Patient feels that loud snoring contributed to his divorce. Patient has a Class II skeletal, underdeveloped lower jaw. Bicuspid extractions which constricts the upper and lower arches and forces the tongue backwards to obstruct the airway.

Sleep Case Bruce
There are 3 ways to treat sleep apnea including oral appliance, CPAP and surgery. Patients who are overweight are also encouraged to lose weight. 10% reduction in weight can reduce AHI by 30%.

Objectives

On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:

Male age 62, loud snoring, pretreatment hospital sleep study, AHI 32, severe sleep apnea. Class II skeletal, underdeveloped lower jaw, retruded tongue position. Sleep Case Bruce:
To determine if an oral appliance can effectively reduce severe sleep apnea. Male obese (BMI over 30) age 65, large 20” neck, UPPP surgical procedure to remove uvula and excess pharyngeal tissue, severe sleep apnea, extreme daytime sleepiness. Sleep specialist reported him to the motor vehicle department to have license suspended unless he got the sleep problem corrected.
