Description

The CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) is a device which consists of an air compressor and a mask which forces air through the nose into the lungs to try and increase the level of oxygen and prevent sleep apnea. CPAP is the treatment of choice for patients who have been diagnosed using a polysomnogram with severe sleep apnea.

Sleep Case David D.
Male patient age 49 with numerous health problems including heart problems, type 2 diabetes, diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and prescribed a CPAP. Could not tolerate CPAP. No follow up by the sleep specialist to see if he was wearing the CPAP device. Extremely tired, emotional problems. Separate bedrooms due to loud snoring.

Sleep Case Willie
Patients who lose their oral appliance or require repair of the oral appliance need to wear a temporary oral appliance. The sleep clinician is responsible to maintain the patients airway using a temporary appliance while the oral appliance is being fabricated or repaired.

Objectives

On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:
The indications and contra-indications for CPAP will be discussed. There are different masks which the patients can wear ranging from nasal masks to full face masks.
On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:

Review records including TMJ Health Questionnaire, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and other sleep records. Successfully treated with Somnodent oral appliance with an anterior deprogrammer due to severe bruxism. Wife and patient extremely grateful due to dramatic improvement in health and reduction of snoring and sleep apnea. Pre treatment hospital sleep study, AHI 30, severe sleep apnea. Post treatment hospital sleep study, AHI 1.9, normal.
On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:

To demonstrate the technique for fabricating the NORAD temporary appliance as well as the Z Quiet temporary appliance.
