Description

Children can also snore and have obstructive sleep apnea. The two main causes are constricted upper arches and enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Airway obstruction can also cause children to suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). These children are often aggressive and irritable and difficult to handle at school.

Sleep Case Jeanette
Female patient age 60 with severe obstructive sleep apnea who could not tolerate CPAP.

Sleep Case David F.
Male patient age 51 slightly overweight, snoring and bicuspid extraction case, collapsed arches, tongue at the back of his throat, large 18” neck. Diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, prescribed CPAP, unable to wear it. Due to large tongue, had to add a tongue depressor to the Somnodent oral appliance.

Objectives

On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:
There are two important solutions to solving sleep disorders including snoring and sleep apnea in children. The treatment is 80% effective when the upper arch is expanded with a fixed or removable appliance and the surgical removal of the tonsils and adenoids.
On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:
Sleep Case Jeanette
Oral appliance (EMA) successfully treated her sleep apnea and snoring. The EMA appliance is relatively inexpensive and has a number of different straps with different lengths which can be used to titrate the appliance forward gradually to the correct position to eliminate the sleep apnea and snoring problem. Review of the pre-treatment hospital sleep study, AHI 65 (severe) and post treatment home sleep study, AHI 1.7 (normal).
On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:
Summary of complete records for treatment snoring and sleep apnea. Extra-oral and intra-oral photographs, 8 pages Diagnostic Forms including neck size, blood pressure, size of tongue, uvula, soft palate, tonsils, size of maxilla, size of mandible, summary of sleep studies (home or hospital). Other forms include, 4 page history form including degree of daytime sleepiness, CPAP intolerance, family history, medical history, alcohol or coffee at bedtime, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, TMJ Health Questi
