Dr Last has excelled as an applied veterinary pathologist, building up a veterinary laboratory service that serves eight of the nine provinces in South Africa. He also is involved as external examiner for undergraduate and post-graduate students at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria and also regularly serves as locum pathologist at several laboratories in the UK.
