Description

Medical Infrared Imaging in Veterinary Medicine Medical Infrared Imaging (MII) or thermography is a noninvasive imaging modality that measures and graphically displays skin temperature patterns. Any process that disrupts the sympathetic control of a dermatome will alter its perfusion and thus change the surface temperature and thermographic pattern of that region. To assess the utility of MII in evaluating cats with hyperthyroidism, 20 hyperthyroid (HT) cats confirmed with thyroid levels and 24 normal cats were evaluated. The best MII results (92.1%) were achieved in the unshaved group while the best results (86.5%) were achieved in the shaved group. To determine the utility of MII in evaluating dogs with appendicular bone cancer, 40 dogs confirmed with appendicular bone cancer were assessed. Elbow/Knee, cranial view: 88%; Full limb, cranial view: 90%; Shoulder/Hip, lateral view: 75%; Carpus, caudal view: 100% overall success in identifying dogs with bone cancer. It is important to recognize this modality is a sensitive and not a specific test and is best used as a screening test. It is not possible to make a definitive diagnosis with MII, however, MII is an emerging technology that can be used to guide clinicians’ diagnostic plans.

Dr. Dominic Marino graduated with honors from Auburn University in Alabama, where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. He completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia and a three-year comprehensive residency in small animal orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Marino was honored with both the Martin and Beatrice Weiser Outstanding Research Award and the North Shore Animal League Petering Scholarship Award during his residency. He is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and is the former head of Orthopedic/Neurosurgery service at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Marino is one of a handful of veterinary surgeons certified as a Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. He is one of only two veterinarians to become board certified by The American College of Clinical Thermology where he was granted the status of research fellow. Dr Marino has published many scientific articles, and authored chapters in veterinary medical textbooks. He lectures extensively both nationally and internationally on many surgical topics including soft tissue, orthopedic and neurosurgery at both human and veterinary conferences. Dr. Marino served as chairman of the Eastern Veterinary Orthopedic Society for several years and as a member on the National Advisory Board of North Shore Animal League America. He is the director of The Canine Chiari Institute at Long Island Veterinary Specialists and on the board of directors of The New York Veterinary Foundation and the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association. Dr. Marino serves as the surgical consultant to: The Humane Society of New York, NY; Nassau University Medical Center, Uniondale, NY; North Shore Animal League America, Port Washington, NY; Bide-A-Wee Animal Adoption Center, Wantagh, NY; The Guide Dog Foundation, Smithtown, NY; Sweet Briar Nature Preserve, Smithtown, NY; New York City Police Department, Metropolitan Transit Authority, Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Corrections, Suffolk County Police Department, Transportation Security Administration, Port Authority of NY & NJ, and the Federal Air Marshals. Dr. Dominic J. Marino is the chief of staff of Long Island Veterinary Specialists. Established in 1998, LIVS is among the most active veterinary referral centers in the U.S.
