Description

Value engineering projects use FAST diagrams to reveal How/Why (cause-and-effect) relationships in a system. Following this, traditional brainstorming methods are used to identify opportunities to improve system functioning. Traditional brainstorming is limited by the experiences of the participants in the room and is often plagued with psychological inertia. This workshop will provide a structured approach to brainstorming that is based on the fundamentals of TRIZ. TRIZ is the Russian acronym for Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. This theory is based on a 60 year study of over 2 million worldwide patents. The application of the fundamentals of TRIZ will be integrated with FAST diagrams. The benefit of this approach is to break down psychological inertia by applying a structured set of abstract solution principles to the functions, promoting unfettered creativity, resulting in more innovative ideas generated, in less time. This workshop addresses both Creativity and Team Leader Skills and Techniques, as related to application of the TRIZ techniques.

certified AVS, an Altshuller Institute Certified TRIZ Practitioner, a Pretium certified TRIZ Master Black Belt, and a Registered Professional Engineer (Michigan). He has authored papers: "FAST Diagrams: The Foundation for Creating Effective Function Models" (TRIZCON, November, 2011); “A Method for Applying TRIZ to Enhance Brainstorming” (SAVE, June 2011); and, “TRIZ Applied to Value Management: How Structured Innovation Enhances Value Brainstorming” (TRIZCON, October, 2010).
