Description

In today’s competitive business environment, it is always challenging for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to introduce new products that meet the needs of end user, trade partners, brand marketing, manufacturing and other stake holders, at the optimal cost. In addition to these challenges, the manufacturer needs to introduce the product faster to market, without compromising the internal and external customer needs. These challenges put a huge pressure on the product development cross-functional team to meet all the internal and external customer needs and introduce the product on time to the market, which can lead to missing out on some unmet needs in the product.

This paper discusses a method to consider all the needs of both internal and external customers, understanding their importance against the cost that is spent on those needs currently by using an enhanced functional analysis process. This can also help the cross-functional team to scope out the new project when considering the needs of end user, shopper and trade partner by spending the right amount of cost on these needs to make the product competitive in terms of aesthetic and technical performance. When completely understanding what customers are looking for in the product and then providing them in the product at the right cost, that product will become competitive in the market.

Jagathesh is currently the Asia-South Regional Design for Value Manager responsible for facilitating Design for Assembly (DFA), Pre-Winning Definition Tollgate (WDT), and Post-WDT Value Engineering (VE) and Value Analysis Workshops respectively for Whirlpool Corporation in South Asia, across all appliance categories. He has more than sixteen years of industrial and consultancy experience in the area of Home Appliances, Automotive, Power Systems and Die Forging Product Development. Previous to his current assignment, he held different positions as Project Technology Leader and Regional Technology Leader in Refrigeration Products. He is an Associate Value Specialist (AVS) with a Mechanical Engineering background.
