Description

Nowadays, due to dynamics of the appliance market in North America, companies are focusing their efforts on developing engineers to be capable to generate new and fresh ideas, with fast implementation and low technical complexity to reduce material costs. This is accentuated in areas of product design.

Without innovation, companies’ products and services are at risk of being outdated or not in touch with customer expectations and eventually, becoming obsolete. However, due to the strong focus on cost reduction, engineers are not always challenged on their creativity and the ideas generated on every value engineering event are generally the same or of the same concept. Sometimes the technical feasibility of the ideas or required capital and expenses are more heavily weighted than the need to generate truly innovative ideas.

With the use of function analysis, the facilitator will guide the cross functional team through the analysis of what the product or service must perform from the customer’s perspective and facilitate a brainstorming session to propose different technical solutions which lead the team to develop a product that fulfills the main customer needs. It is on this phase when the facilitator will encourage the team to challenge creativity and “think what nobody has thought,” as Albert Einstein once said. Marketing’s involvement becomes essential to have representation of the "voice of the customer" (VOC) before generating ideas.
