This course will give an overview of the systemic condition of Sickle Cell Anemia, its associated hemoglobinopathies and their ocular manifestations.

Objectives

Course Objectives
After completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Understand the variations in hemoglobin types
- Identify lab testing utilized to identify hemoglobin variations
- Assess systemic risk factors for those with sickling hemoglobin
- Diagnose and treat ocular manifestations of sickle cell
- Educate patients about genetic , systemic, and ocular manifestations of sickle cell

Dr. Lindsay M. Elkins sees patients in the Adult Primary Care Service in The Eye Center at Southern College of Optometry. Her clinical interests include: Glaucoma, Dry Eye Syndrome, Macular degeneration, Ocular inflammation, and ocular manifestations of systemic diseases including diabetes and hypertension.

As the Coordinator of School Screenings, Dr. Elkins facilitates the performance of vision screenings for children in local schools and community organizations by our student interns in addition to providing education to administrators about children’s eye health. Dr. Elkins is a devoted animal lover and enjoys spending time with her husband, young son, and their dog Indy.
