Description

Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) in all healthcare practice plays a vital role in providing quality health services and enhances the quality of clinical decision making. Applying EBM principles into clinical practice requires knowledge and skill to acquire, analyze and apply best-fit scientific evidence. In this course we discuss and demonstrate the Silicy model- 5 A in EBP namely Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply and Audit.

Objectives

To Describe the 5 A Model of EBP
5 A model of EBP includes Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply and Audit. Addressing Clinical Challenge with this EBP process begins with framing the right PICO statement for the Clinical challenge, Using appropriate database (online, offline, etc) to get suitable articles, apply Critical appraisal tools to ascertain quality of evidence & note key take home points, Apply these scientific evidence to Clinical Practice and eventually Audit the potential outcome in clinical practice.
To demonstrate the process of EBP using 5 A and analyse its application for a clinical challenge
Able to Ask & Acquire relevant literature using PICO and compile studies as per the level of evidence. Apply Critical Appraisal Tools (CASP guideline, READER, etc) and compile the key points for clinical application.

Additional Contributors

The OCULUS project aims to enhance optometry curricula within two higher education institutions in Israel and three in India by benchmarking these to the European Diploma and ensuring that evidence-based Practice (EBP) is taught effectively. Within this project we analyse the current EBP teaching methods in the different curricula by mapping courses within each curriculum to the five EBP steps (Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply and Audit). Acknowledge the good efforts of team OCULUS (https://oculus.erasmus-plus.org.il/mod/page/view.php?id=32) - Dr Catherine Suttle, City University for EBP module training. Wish to acknowledge Sankara Nethralaya for permitting to use the clinical images
