Description

Learn basic sports physiology and nutritional concepts to recommend a sports diet tailored to athletes based on their particular type of sport or activity. Explore supplements, macro and micronutrients, ergogenic aids, and special considerations for female athletes. Conclude with case studies on body composition and nutritional recommendations.

At the conclusion of this course there will be an exam containing 75 questions. A passing grade of 70% or better is needed in order to receive credit for this course.

Please note this course is a live recording from the 2017 offering of the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP®) courses offered at NUHS.
*This course may be used towards total hours to sit for the CCSP® Exam by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP™).
** The ACBSP™ allows 60% of the coursework to be attained online and 40% of the coursework to be attained live. For further questions on attaining hours towards the CCSP®, please contact postgrad@nuhs.edu or go to http://acbsp.com/

***STUDENTS: the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP™) only allows chiropractic students to take one CCSP® course or topic while still enrolled in university. Current doctoral students would take the remainder of the hours required to sit for the CCSP® exam after they attain their DC degree.

Objectives

Understand basic muscle physiology for athletes
Understand the mechanics of muscle contraction, muscle fatigue and soreness, and the difference between fast and slow twitch fibers. Discuss cardiac physiology.
Understand training types and how their nutritional needs differ
Discuss the difference between aerobic and anaerobic training, endurance athletes, and power athletes.
Understand safe and unsafe or illegal supplements
Learn how supplements, vitamins, ergogenic aids, and drugs can help or harm an athlete. Discuss commonly used drugs in athletes (legal and illegal).
Understand special considerations for the female athlete
Learn the female athletic triad and how that effects the nutritional needs of female athletes.
Understand concussion and the impact it has on athletes
Discuss the causes of concussion and its resulting impact on athletic performance, immediate and longterm, and how nutrition can potentially be a factor in preventing or helping treat symptoms.
Understand how to test body composition and use that information to make nutritional recommendations
Learn the various methods for testing body composition. Discuss case studies on different types of athletes with different body compositions and how their nutritional needs differ.
