Description

The course covers the aspects of an examination that should be performed prior to fitting contact lenses. This includes the health history, contact lens history, ocular health examination and ocular measurements. Contra-indications to contact lens wear are discussed. Based on the vision examination the type of contact lens to consider for the patient (hydrogel, rigid, sphere, toric) is covered.

Objectives
The objective of the course is for the student to understand the importance of the pre-fitting examination and the important aspects that help determine if a patient is a good candidate for contact lens wear. Based on the examination results the student should be able to determine the best type of lens to initially try on the patient.

Dr Gerald Lowther O.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Lowther has spent his career providing patient care in the area of contact lenses, teaching contact lens courses in university settings, doing clinical research and lecturing internationally. He is past president of the American Academy of Optometry, National Board of Examiners in Optometry and the International Society for Contact Lens Research. He has published over 100 research papers and authored three books and numerous chapters in other books. He has received numerous awards. He retired from the School of Optometry at Indiana University as dean.
