Description

Contact Lens Materials and Applications This presentation is designed to give you a greater appreciation for the individual characteristics that comprise both soft and rigid gas permeable lens materials. We will discuss the various material characteristics for soft lenses including their FDA classifications, the oxygen permeability of the various materials and the benefits that accompany each of those characteristics. We will also illustrate the various manufacturing techniques involved in the processing of soft lenses and how each is related to the fitting of the lens.

Objectives
Upon completion of the course the participant should be able to: describe the various material characteristics for soft lenses including their FDA classifications, oxygen permeability, and benefits that accompany those characteristics; describe the various material attributes important in RGP fitting including oxygen permeability and transmissibility, wetting angle and specific gravity; demonstrate understanding of the importance of each material component; compare the various material characteristics and justify the selection of specific materials based on their individual merits.
