This course gives you an introduction to the basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with emphasis on how GIS is used by land surveyors. GIS is a database with a geographical component. You will be presented with many examples in this course, and descriptions about what GIS can do and how it is used. We are living in the data age and this course is designed to get you to think about how GIS could be an effective tool for managing data. The cost of GIS ranges from free to very expensive and this course will also explain how you can get started using GIS.

Objective 1
Provide a basic understanding of what GIS is and how it is used by land surveyors
Objective 2
Understand the information on the costs and investments associated with using GIS
Objective 3
Encourage the learner to recognize the value of GIS and think of it as an efficiency tool for organizing, analyzing, and reporting on data

Christine Gayron is President of Gayron de Bruin Land Surveying and Engineering. She began her career in the civil engineering industry in 2000 after completing a BS in Geology at City University of New York – Queens College. She started as a technician and design engineer working on utility design projects for public and private clients. Christine became a project manager in 2002, and gained extensive experience performing high accuracy surveying and mapping. She became a Licensed Land Surveyor in 2010, and partnered with Greg de Bruin to form Gayron de Bruin (GdB). She has presented PDH technical lectures on general surveying and LiDAR. GdB has been featured in POB Magazine as one of the Top 100 Geospatial Firms in the United States. Christine has been recognized in xyHt Magazine as one of “40 under 40” noteworthy geospatial professionals worldwide.

Christine is a member of the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors (NYSAPLS) and serves as its Young Professionals Committee chairperson. She also serves as the New York State delegate to the Young Professionals Network of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS). She is also the Vice President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) – Long Island Branch.

Christine would like to close the gap between engineering and geomatics and promote innovation within the civil engineering industry. She finds it important to blend conventional methods with high tech equipment such as GIS and software including GIS to successfully and efficiently execute design projects. She also recognizes the importance of mentoring students and broadening the awareness of civil engineering and land surveying to the next generation. Christine has served as a speaker/panelist for State University of New York - Stony Brook student organizations, and has participated in mentoring programs at professional conferences. She has also presented and administered the Trigstar math contest to high school students, and she regularly hires student interns to expose them to the industry.
