Description

Module 16 of Kidney School explains how people with kidney failure can live for decades with dialysis and/or a kidney transplant. This module also describes the long-term effects of dialysis and how to deal with them.

The purpose of Kidney School Continuing Education courses is to enable the learner to better understand the medical and psychosocial impacts of end stage renal disease, as well as patients’ experience of coping with this chronic condition.

• Left ventricular hypertrophy
• Renal osteodystrophy
• Dialysis-related amyloidosis
• Peripheral neuropathy
Explain the role of longer and/or more frequent hemodialysis in addressing long-term problems of dialysis.
Impact of longer/more frequent hemodialysis
• Removes more water
• Removes more toxins
• Normalizes bone mineral metabolism
• Protects nerves
Describe several steps patients can take to help avoid long-term problems of dialysis.
Steps patients can take
• Follow any diet/fluid limits
• Take prescribed medications
• Quit smoking cigarettes
• Consider switching treatments
