Description

The purpose of this one-hour CE webinar is to inform oral health professionals about the most common intraoral manifestations of legal and illicit drug use and abuse. The most common physical signs of illicit drug use that appear outside the mouth will be included.

Objectives

On completion of this course the learner will be able to:
• Identify the most common intraoral manifestations of legal and illicit drug use and abuse.
• Provide resources for management of the most common oral side effects
• Best prevent a medical emergency, better identify signs of drug abuse among their patient population

Dr. Nancy Williams

Dr. Nancy J. Williams currently holds the title of Professor Emeritus following her retirement from the UTHSC College of Dentistry in May 2015. From 1980-2014, Dr. Williams taught in the Department of Dental Hygiene, UTHSC College of Health Professions where she rose to the rank of Professor and later became Graduate Director of the second online master of dental hygiene program in the U.S.
Her teaching, scholarly and service work centers on medically compromised patients, a subject she taught for 35 years. Her main area of interest is patients and oral health professionals who suffer from alcoholism and addiction. She wrote the first chapter on tobacco’s impact on oral health in Esther Wilkins’ text, The Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist, 8th edition. She served as an NIH co-investigator for a grant that studied the role of genetics and nicotine addiction. She is also a certified nicotine interventionist having completed courses at Indiana University, Mayo Clinic, and University of Mississippi.

Dr. Williams has presented and published on many aspects of alcoholism and addiction including overview of drugs of abuse and how this disease affects both oral health care providers and patients.

Due to her work and commitment to tobacco cessation she was awarded the ADHA Presidential Citation. She takes great pride in being a recipient of the prestigious ADHA/Warner Lambert Award of Excellence (1992).
