Description

Three often repeated concerns clinicians have about chairside CAD/CAM dentistry deal with restoration fit, restoration strength and added appointment time. Although all concerns were perhaps at one point, valid, we are currently in a new age of chairside CAD/CAM technology, where manufacturers have recently released or developed the next generation of systems that have solved major shortcomings of systems past. This new evolution of intra-oral digitizers, combined with next-generation ceramics, have led to systems that allow for the fabrication of restorations that surpass the predictability, strength and fit of laboratory-fabricated restorations.

Objectives

Objectives
Use current literature to describe the longevity of modern ceramic restorations. Compare the fit of conventional laboratory fabricated restorations and chairside milled restorations. Describe several time saving features of the E4D NEVO.

Dr. Walter G. Renne is a 2003 graduate of the College of Charleston and a 2008 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine. He is active in undergraduate dental education and holds a full-time faculty position in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation at MUSC. He is the director of CAD/CAM Technologies and runs the eight-operatory CAD/CAM clinics at MUSC and directs the preclinical CAD/CAM course. He has implemented computerized preparation evaluation utilizing E4D compare in dental morphology and fixed prosthodontics. Dr. Renne maintains an active general dentistry practice utilizing both the CEREC Omnicam and E4D NEVO systems. His special interests in patient treatment include advances in CAD/CAM dentistry, adhesive dentistry and conservative dentistry. He is active in dental research and currently has a patent for a new dental adhesive that is permanently antimicrobial in addition to having revolutionary bond durability components that prevent enzyme degradation of the hybrid layer. This bonding agent may prevent recurrent caries and bond breakdown in the long term.
