This course provides a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the history, physical principles, safety issues and economic considerations of air abrasion dentistry.

Objectives

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do the following:Discuss the differences between preparing teeth with a rotary drill and with air abrasion.Understand why the use of air abrasion in cavity preparation is more biocompatible than rotary drill preparation.Describe the cutting ability of air abrasion on the various substrate/materials.Understand the problems associated with amalgam removal using air abrasion.List the three levels at which air abrasion can produce significant economic benefits.Describe the technique used in caries removal/cavity preparation using air abrasion.Understand the size classification of aluminum oxide particles commonly used in air abrasion dentistry.Discuss the advantages of bond strength of air abraded teeth with and without acid etching.Understand the principle of kinetic energy as it relates to the air abrasion technique.Delineate between the different air abrasion units and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.List and discuss the application of air abrasion for the various clinical techniques.

Dr. Mark Pitel is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Esthetic Dentistry at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and co-director or Predoctoral and CDE esthetics. He also maintains a private practice in Poughkeepsie, New York. A 3rd generation dentist, he has over 29 years experience owning and operating private general practices with an “emphasis on Cosmetic, Restorative and Implant Dentistry” in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California and New York. A past president of the New Jersey Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Pitel is an active member of numerous other dental organizations such as the International Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He has received his fellowship from the American College of Dentists, the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Academy of Dentofacial Esthetics, holds Level II certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry and has been recognized by Who's Who in Dentistry. Dr. Pitel is an internationally recognized expert and lecturer on topics such as adhesive dentistry, anterior and posterior esthetic restorations and cosmetic and laser dentistry. He has authored numerous scientific papers and articles of interest to patients and is the author of a textbook on dental impression taking. A former editor of the NJ AGD Journal, he has received several awards for journalism in dentistry.
