Description

The purpose of this course is to review how the inflammation process functions in the human body. The role of inflammation in oral and systemic health will be discussed. Translating this information into practical application for dental healthcare professionals will be addressed so that both inquiring patients and astute clinicians can capitalize on the opportunities for improving total health. Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the dental professional should be able to:
Objective 1:
recognize the consistent relationship between oral inflammation and systemic diseases.
Objective 2:
modify assessment, prevention, and treatment protocols.
Objective 3:
aid patients in improving their oral and overall health.
Objective 4:
describe the connection between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis.
Objective 5:
explain the inflammatory response in regard to vascular and cellular reaction.
Objective 6:
discuss the relationship between oral infection, diabetes mellitus, and respiratory disease.
Objective 7:
identify mechanisms for resolving inflammation.

JoAnn R. Gurenlian, RDH, PhD, is Professor and Graduate Program Director, Department of Dental Hy- giene, Idaho State University, and President of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists. She has experience in general, periodontic, pediatric, and orthodontic practices and also works part-time in a medical practice.

She is an internationally recognized speaker on the topics of oral pathology, oral medicine, diabetes, and women’s health.
