Description

This course is designed to help assistants prevent work-related pain and injuries. Learn anatomy and mechanisms of microtrauma affecting the assistant. Discover how body mechanics, positioning, instruments and operatory layouts can affect your musculoskeletal health. In this course, the pros and cons of assisting stool features, as well as proper stool adjustment will be discussed. Also learn how strong postural muscles help protect the back, and the importance of chairside stretching to prevent muscle imbalances.

Objectives

After completion of this course, the dental professional should be able to:
Objective 1:
Describe how ergonomic principles apply to dental assisting.
Objective 2:
State the primary Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) to which dental assistants are suscep- tible and explain how this MSD occurs in dental assisting.
Objective 3:
Recognize the warning signs of developing MSDs.
Objective 4:
Describe neutral posture of the spine, shoulder and wrist.
Objective 5:
Describe proper positioning of the assistant in relation to the patient.
Objective 6 :
Demonstrate proper use and placement of the torso support bar.
Objective 7:
Identify important features of assisting stools and how to properly adjust them.
Objective 8:
Describe proper positioning of the patient in the chair using flat and double articulating headrests.
Objective 9:
Explain proper and improper placement of delivery systems and instrument trays and how these can affect the assistant’s musculoskeletal health.
Objective 10:
Describe how to implement chairside stretching to minimize muscle imbalances.
Objective 11:
List two important abdominal muscle groups to strengthen in order to stabilize the trunk.

Bethany Valachi, MS, PT, CEAS is a physical therapist, certified ergonomic assessment specialist and owner of Posturedontics, which she co-founded with Keith Valachi, DDS. A member of the National Speaker’s Association, she presents dental ergonom- ic seminars internationally and provides in-office ergonomic consultations to help dental professionals avoid injuries and extend careers. She is a published author in numerous dental journals, including the JADA, and contributing author to a dental hygiene textbook. She has developed home exercise and chairside stretching video programs specifically for dental professionals.
