Description

Oral Appliances & Narval Appliance
Clinicians need to know the indications and contra-indications for oral appliances. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (sleep specialists) recommends oral appliances for patients following a sleep study that are diagnosed with mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Oral appliances are also suitable for patients with severe sleep apnea who cannot wear CPAP devices. Numerous oral appliances will be shown including 3-4 that Dr. Rondeau uses routinely.

Surgery
Surgery is another option for treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Different surgical procedures will be described so that the clinician can communicate intelligently with ENT specialists who will be performing these procedures on their patients.

Objectives

Oral Appliances & Narval Appliance
On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:
Clinicians need to know the indications and contra-indications for the various oral appliances. The following is a list of the different oral appliances that will be shown including EMA, Somnodent, Narval, Dorsal, SUAD, Modified Herbst, Silencer, Tongue Retraining Device, Klearway, TAP, Silent Nite, Full Breath and temporary appliances (NORAD and Z Quiet).
Surgery
On completion of this unit the clinician will understand:
a) Nasal Surgery is recommended for nasal obstruction. Surgical removal of large turbinates, deviated septums, polyps, etc..
b) Throat Surgery:
LAUP, (Laser Assisted uvulopalatoplasty)
Conservative surgical reduction of the uvula and enlarged soft palatal tissues at the back of the throat.
UPPP (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty)
Radical surgical reduction of the excess tissue at the back of the throat including elimination of the uvula and extensive soft tissue reduction.
c) Tracheotomy:
