Description

The use of tobacco and nicotine products continues to create serious health compromises to those addicted to its use. In addition to the harmful effects to the lungs and heart, cigarette and smokeless tobacco use are causing significant compromises to the oral cavity as well; the most dangerous being oral cancer. This course will trace the use of tobacco through history and its prevalence and impact on society. It will wade through the various types of tobacco products on the market and how each has very specific effects on the oral cavity as well as other systems of the body. There will be a review of the nature of addiction and the techniques presently being used in smoking cessation, as well as the impact of ENDS ( Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems).
Attendees will learn to identify the stage of readiness of patients to quit, and how to implement motivational interviewing techniques to enhance their efforts in guiding patients to break their nicotine addiction.

Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants will:
1. Be able to put into context how tobacco was introduced into society and how it presently impacts all of us.
2. Be able to identify all the tobacco and nicotine products that are currently being used with a new emphasis on E-Cigarettes
3. Be able to explain how nicotine effects the brain and causes addiction.
4. Be able to identify the systemic pathologies caused by smoking and smokeless tobacco

Dr Nevin Zablotsky D.M.D

Dr. Zablotsky has lectured throughout the U.S and internationally on tobacco related issues, and was a lecturer for the ADA CELL SEMINAR SERIES for many years. He presently is a senior consultant and lecturer on tobacco issues for Nova Southeastern University School of Dental Medicine and Medicine. He has recently authored a chapter on tobacco and oral health, and tobacco cessation in the periodontal textbook, “Non-Surgical Control of Periodontal Diseases” published by Springer. He has received the Vermont Advocate of the Year award from the
American Cancer Society and a lifetime achievement award from the Vermont Special Olympics. He received his dental and a postgraduate degree in periodontology from the Tufts School of Dental Medicine, and is the past president of the Vermont Periodontal Society. He has also taught at Vermont Dental hygiene programs for 30 years.
