Description

The purpose of the module is to present an overview of health literacy, the association of health literacy with health and dental outcomes, how health literacy and oral health literacy are measured, and the role of oral health literacy in promoting oral health and accessing dental care in both private practice and in public health settings. It includes discussion of how oral health literacy can influence long-term oral health outcomes, and how oral health literate approaches can be integrated into private and public health organizations.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course, students will be competent to:
o Define health literacy & oral health literacy for the health care provider and dental public health professional
o Understand the individual, community and public health implications of low oral health literacy
o Explain the association between health, health literacy, health beliefs and culture
o Explain strategies to communicate more clearly with patients, the public, or community
o Identify aspects of an oral health literate organization and be able to suggest ways to implement

Kathryn A. Atchison

Kathryn A. Atchison is Professor in the UCLA School of Dentistry and School of Public Health and Vice Provost, New Collaborative Initiatives at the University of California, Los Angeles. As Vice Provost, she has broad responsibility over developing collaborative partnerships for UCLA with private and public entities. Atchison received her D.D.S. degree from Marquette University Dental School, an M.P.H. degree from Boston University School of Public Health, and a residency in Public Health Dentistry at University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Atchison participated in the Robert Wood Johnson Dental Health Services Research Fellowship, the Bureau of Health Professions Mid-Career Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine and Dentistry, and was a Department of Health and Human Services Primary Health Care Policy Fellow. Atchison is a past President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and past President of the Behavioral Sciences and Health Services Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research.
