This session will help you understand the power of culture during childbirth, the importance of childbirth experience on cultural adaptation, and the role of childbirth educators.

Reclaiming the Sexuality of Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum
The concept of sexuality is often absent from education for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This workshop seeks to reclaim the rich experience of sexuality during the childbearing year. The presenter is uniquely qualified to address this issue; she has over 40 years of experience with Lamaze International well as certifications in sexuality education and sexuality counseling from AASECT. Her extensive experience surrounding LGBTQAI inclusion adds cutting edge concepts for today’s childbirth educator. The keynote will empower birthing women and their partners to embrace their sexuality.

Participants may earn 1.5 Lamaze Contact Hour and 1.8 contact hour of CABRN upon successful completion.

Objectives

Participants will recall the pre/post intervention outcomes of the utilization of a clinical practice guideline for second-stage labor
Describe the Pre/Post outcome results of a clinical practice guideline for second stage labor.
Participants will be able to recognize language within their own curriculum that does not provide true informed consent.
Learner will be able to discuss childbearing rights of pregnant people including the meaning of informed consent.
Learner will be able to examine and modify activities within their childbirth education curriculum to model and reinforce informed consent.
The participant will walk away with an understanding of common terms and labels relating to variations in gender, sexuality, and family structure and be able to incorporate inclusive language skills in their classes to ensure all families feel welcomed.
Participants will discuss common terms and labels relating to variations in gender, sexuality, and family structure.
Participants will describe the social context of LGBTQ parenting and some of the challenges present for these families.
Participants will identify 5 strategies to be inclusive of LGBTQ families in their childbirth education classes.
Participants will apply the concept of the GRACE acronym to effectively facilitate new parent support groups.
Apply the concept of GRACE to manage parent groups.
Participants will be invited to develop strategies to promote diversity in their classes.
Describe culturally influenced health disparities.
Learner will identify a culturally sensitive teaching philosophy.
Participants will be encouraged to reclaim the sexuality of the childbearing year by enhancing awareness of holistic sexuality (physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual empowerment).
List three ways positive sexuality can be incorporated into a childbirth education class.
Describe two ways the use of inclusive LGBTQAI curricula can enhance a childbirth education class.
