Description

Discussing end of life issues and palliative care options with patients who have life-limiting illnesses is challenging. Yet, the need for communication skills that address these issues is growing. In 2014, an estimated 1.6 to 1.7 million Americans received hospice care. The median length of service in 2014 was 17.41 days.i The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) reports that more than half of all hospice patients are women (56.4%) and the majority of hospice patients are 65 years of age or older (83.4%). These data show that the number of patients and their families utilizing hospice services has steadily increased over the past several years. NHPCO data also show that half of hospice patients received care for less than three weeks. The median length of service for almost half of these individuals was 18.7 days.ii The top 5 admitting diagnoses to hospice care are cancer (36.9%), unspecified debility (14.2%), dementia (12.8%), heart disease (11.2%), and lung disease (8.2%).
