Description

Colorectal cancer represents a significant threat to men and women and in Western societies its incidence is increasing. However, with care, adequate screening and early detection, it can be diagnosed and treated effectively. Although Western lifestyles, especially diet and sedentary living, are difficult to change, screening and prompt treatment are nonetheless worthwhile. Nurses have a significant role in conveying this message clearly to the public and encouraging the uptake of available screening services.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to help nurses to consider the risk of colorectal cancer and to review what outcomes screening and early diagnosis of the disease may offer the patient. Understanding the lifestyle origins of the disease and why diagnosis sometimes occurs quite late in its progression highlight the importance of screening.

On completion of this course you will be able to:
Outline screening measures that can help identify colon cancer earlier.
